What is Opuz, really?
Opuz began as a compliance tool, but has evolved into a connected ecosystem for facilities, workforce, property, H&S and smart building management.
If you ask different people what Opuz is, you may get a variety of answers. Some will say it’s a facilities management system, others will call it a compliance tool, and some might see it as a workforce management platform. In reality, Opuz is all of these things and more.
Opuz is a cloud-based software solution designed to simplify and enhance the way organisations manage their facilities, workforce, and compliance requirements. Originally developed in 2012 by SMS Environmental to meet the stringent demands of the water hygiene industry, Opuz has since evolved into a powerful platform that now serves a wide range of industries and regulatory needs.
Unlike many other FM systems, Opuz wasn’t created by software developers who imagined what facilities management should be. It was built by industry professionals who faced real-world challenges and couldn’t find a system fit for purpose.
Before Opuz, SMS Environmental struggled with off-the-shelf solutions that failed to meet their needs. So, they did something bold - they built their own. The goal was to improve service delivery, enhance client visibility, and ensure compliance with UK building safety regulations. The result was a system that not only worked but excelled, leading SMS clients to adopt it for managing compliance across multiple disciplines, including water, fire, electrical, security and asbestos management.
At its core, Opuz is about control and visibility. It provides a digital ecosystem where building owners, managers, compliance teams, engineers, and subcontractors can collaborate efficiently. With a suite of specialised modules, Opuz ensures that every aspect of facility management is covered.
For nearly a decade, Opuz remained a best-kept secret, used exclusively by SMS Environmental and its clients. It wasn’t advertised or actively promoted. Instead, it grew through word of mouth, driven by its effectiveness and reputation.
Opuz has recently taken the next step in its journey, becoming an independent business and expanding into the wider FM market. This transition wasn’t about changing what made Opuz successful - it was about making its benefits available to more organisations.
The FM software market is full of systems that look good on paper but fail to serve the best interests of the end users. Opuz challenges this. It was built from real industry needs, not from assumptions. That’s why it continues to gain interest without traditional marketing - because it genuinely works.
Opuz is here to challenge the standards. We believe FM software should work for you, not against you. It should make compliance easier, not more complicated. It should enhance collaboration, not create silos.
So, what is Opuz? It’s the future of facilities management. It’s the software that helps you get things done, stay compliant, and manage your buildings, workforce, and risks with confidence.

As part of the Opuz SaaS platform upgrade, we moved from a legacy system with standalone client instances storing files in web folders to a modern multi-tenancy architecture. To maintain seamless file management across both systems, we introduced dedicated blob storage for each client and developed APIs to fetch and store files.
